Happy Halloween!

The first hundred or so people at the show tonight will receive a free cassette of a session I did for 4AD one night at a recording studio located on an Island on the Thames river last month. It is a tribute to John Peel. It's like a pretend John Peel session. Stay tuned to 4AD's website for details on how you can get one (there is a very limited supply) if you are unable to attend the show.

Update from Casino Locker Room

Hi guys. Blogs not dead. Trying to get the energy to add some stuff and have some great ideas of things to post soon and some interesting projects in mind that you can all be involved with. Sorry for the big drop off. I was at Target with my mom the other day and she was like "Why aren't you posting on your blog anymore? It's a great way for me to keep up with what your doing while you're away.." which made me feel bad. I just haven't had enough time to record extra material to post and i don't want to post just anything - i make an effort to put up stuff i'm proud of.

On that note, I don't appreciate the people who feel it neccesary to comment so harshly on my friends, No Age and Calvin Johnson. I have considered removing the comments sections on this blog all together for this reason, but have come to the conclusion that its never a good idea to censor anybody. Just understand that if you ask me a question in the comments section and I don't answer it, its not because i'm ignoring you its because i try to avoid reading anonymous jerks complain about shit and disrespect my friends. I like the single i did with Calvin, it is what it was... a cool way to spend a few hours in Olympia. I'm not trying to rip anyone off. If you don't like it put it on ebay in five months.

The Nine Inch Nails shows are a blast. Everyone is extremely easy to get along with and really good at their jobs. Its really amazing to watch how much effort and energy goes into putting on these huge arena shows. The lights are FANTASTIC as is the sound. It's a really intense thing to experience. I am really honored for Deerhunter to have been asked along.

There is a new Atlas Sound album almost completely finished. It is called "Logos" and will be realeased sometime in the new year.

Expect some suprises with the physical release of Microcastle.

Finally, to the person who wrote and was disappointed and felt "short-changed" at the norfolk show, I apologize. We put every bit of our energy when we are on stage into performing as well as we can. We really do care about every song enough so that when i'm playing them i don't think about anything but the sound coming of the stage. I'm sincerely sorry you had a bad experience. I hope I can make it up to you in the future...

Here is a picture my mom wanted me to post. It is she and i with my first guitar when i was 10 or so. This guitar was later smashed by a neighborhood bully under the influence of huffing glade and watching a Danzig Video.

LOVE YOU MOM

For now, If you'd like to do a Q&A post please post questions in the comments section for ANY bandmember. We will try and answer them today or tomorrow. Try and keep them organized and somewhat tasteful.

I'm on Vacation at Home. Here is a new Deerhunter demo.

Here are some pictures from my downtime here in Atlanta. Some of the pictures are of Kristin's house. She's tour managing King Khan & his Shrines right now so I digitized her house so she could look at it. If you have a chance go check out the Shrines. The show here on 4th of July was rad. Some of the other photos are of the old Notown building. Another thing I've been doing while taking a break from the blog has been setting up the new Notown II in an old building downtown. We are practicing and writing new songs there. Here is a demo I made for a new Deerhunter song. This version is just me but it will be a Deerhunter song as soon as I see them tomorrow night at practice. Lockett is in Mexico. I bought the loudest amp possible. It's an old Univox head.

Saw My Bloody Valentine in London Saturday Night

(somebody's video from youtube...it's actually from friday night. on saturday night the noise lasted for 25 minutes. and was considerably louder according to db meters)
I will now contribute to the ongoing modern folklore and mythologizing of MBV:

It was the single loudest thing I have ever experienced. The sound moved my face. My balls retracted. It was like standing in front of the mouth of hell or a nuclear holocaust. If this sounds like fun, you are like me and FUCKED UP. It hurt.

Other random notes / points for discussion among you, the reader:

1. Debbie Googe is a badass.

2. Is the cathartic noise-burst at the end (which you've all probably read or heard about or perhaps even experienced firsthand) really cathartic since we all know its coming. Does this reduce its impact?

3. My Bloody Valentine are a folk band. Their music transfers experience in broad, ambiguous terms utilizing simple chords and melodies.

4. The sound guy (who also does sound for Mogwai) deserves some kind of huge reward for being a brilliant sonic architect.

5. This is not a point of debate but an observation: During the final 20 minute nihilist noise assault I went from excited to tense to happy to sort of depressed to feeling ill to feeling absolutely nothing. It is the closest I have come to complete meditation or a hypnotic state in a long time. I actually did not think at all for about five minutes.

6. Moses noted that "Belinda had the same facial expression when she was staring at the ground playing guitar that a elementary school teacher has when operating a photocopier."

7. Whitney who has never heard of MBV and was dragged to the show by the rest of us looked up to me at one point and silently mouthed the words "what the fuuuuuck" to me. She also smiled a lot before her fucking face melted off.

Panda Bear's Bookie Pad Micromix

"we had some trouble with rain today. the sky kind of threatened most of the evening and we got worried about being electrocuted some. we had put some small tarps and shirts and things over the equipment and hoped the skies would clear until finally a pocket of blue sky slowly opened just up above us and grew out until most of the sky seemed less scary.
while we played i was sure for a little bit that i had been in that place doing the same thing and then i thought maybe i had just dreamt it before. i should say i felt really good when the guy who had put on the show seemed happy and glad that it hadnt gotten rained out. i was glad too for sure. these are some songs that have been making me feel psyched recently.
the mogollar song is for fitz for sure. the thin lizzys are for fitz and for brad both and i should say theyre probably the most listened to on tours these days. some of these jams have been good ones for a while and some are just new for me."

Geologist's Mojito Micromix

bradford asked me to make a micromix for his blog, so here it is. we've been having fun playing new jams for each other on this tour so i was going to make a full mix of bands and songs bradford didn't know but then noah said i should include some classic favorites of mine as well. united by the music makers is a good example. if i'm ever really rich i want to have an entire room in my house dedicated to that song being on loop. i also included a track by one of braddax's (aka reverend green) bands. they are called home and they rule. we were big fans of them in the 90's long before he became our tour manager and lighting dude. i followed it with thin lizzy because i wanted to see if i could make braddax cum on the spot when he heard the crossfade. it didn't work but he was still pretty psyched. some other stuff about the jams...the honeycombs track is produced by joe meek but you would never guess it. they are also a rock band with a female drummer. i think before the velvet underground, but i'm not sure about that. definitely before lenny kravitz. the mamas and papas track has been a favorite of mine since our first tour with black dice in 2001 when we were staying at a house of a friend of theirs in LA. he was a surfer and worked for quiksilver or something. he played that for us and also showed me crystal voyager for the first time. i've been listening to that phil collins edit everyday for about a month now, and steppin out is usually close by if i'm making a playlist on my ipod or something. there is a new animal collective song we've been working on that reminds me of the end of that one. there is stuff i could say about the other jams but i don't want to ramble on any longer. mainly i just like them. hope you enjoy it.

1. Joe Jackson - Steppin' Out
2. Phil Collins - I'm Not Moving (Idjut Boys Edit)
3. Big Cherry - Come in Bonzo
4. The Byrds - Dolphin's Smile
5. Mamas and the Papas - Snowqueen of Texas
6. The Honeycombs - I Can Tell (Something's Up)
7. Music Makers - United
8. J Dilla - Bye
9. Home - The Bogeyman
10. Thin Lizzy - Little Girl in Bloom

ATP Pix + Atlas Sound - Galaxy Cruiser (New Jam)

The journey for Deerhunter from Dublin to ATP was interesting to say the least. Kristin rented a van to get us from the London airport to Camber Sands and ended up blowing a tire. Whitney's response: climb tree with beer. Then the Black Lips showed up for comic relief (only one road leads to Camber Sands and they saw us walking around...) After they left we were taken in by an AMAZING british couple. They showed us to their cottage and we had a candlelight wine / dinner at dusk. They had a hyperactive dog named Barker. They were some of the kindest people I've had the pleasure to meet. Here are some photos from the road:

Here's a song I made on the bus ("Galaxy Cruiser") its for the Animal Collective dudes and Braddax, Fitz, & Chris.

Atlas Sound - Things I'll Miss EP

The worst part of playing music is the homesickness that comes with being on tour all the time.

1. MY CAR
my car is so white
especially at twilight
my car is so bright
especially at twilight

in two days i'll find
i'm completely desperate
in two days i'll find
i'm completely desperate

my car is so white
escapes depression
takes me through twilight
in several deminsions

my car is so white
i'll miss it's speed
and no one can ever
replace the speed

2. MY ROOM
(instrumental)

3. MY BED
(instrumental)

4. RECORDING ACOUSTIC DRUMS
(instrumental)

5. MARIETTA
courting the girl with one leg
recording a tape of wind
passing notes when
i could get away with anything
trusting the spring
to bring loads of fireflies
to the field coated in fog
to that field coated in fog
captured in my hands
i captured them in my hands
smashed smashed
against the ground
neon blood all around

Matthew xv. 14

And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch. ~Matthew xv. 14

I added a bible-verse-of-the-day generator to the atlas sound myspace page. This was the verse for today. This was the verse I made the title of the record from - half-remembered from being a kid and hearing it in sunday school.

Just thought it was interesting and neat.

P.S. For all you Ableton users on a Mac... DON'T install the most recent airport update. It causes all these CPU spikes, making tracks skip for no reason no matter how high you set your buffer level. It also causes other system malfunctions and slows shit down.

Deerhunter - Winter Never Stops (Acoustic) from Bradford Cox on Vimeo.

Friday Night Practice on the Marietta Square

We made a tape of us practicing some Microcastle songs on the train tracks. I will eventually put it on the computer and see if it sounds decent enough to post.

Whitney also conquered the peak of the empty fountain in the center of the square before a NIGHTCOP busted our scene. He was very friendly, though and only concerned for her safety. He encouraged us to continue to "jam." Recorded cover of Tom Petty classic "Last Dance with Mary Jane" which was interrupted by oncoming train. "Jane / Train" rhyme scenario. Thanks to Johnny for taking pictures and making us white tea. Microcastle title = homage to Marietta Architecture / Culture. Faux ivy and forged antiquity. Peaceful at night.

Does anyone know how to make things fit on blogger without cropping them?

Atlas Sound - Cold and Golden

Portrait of Christ with further illustration by the late Benjamin Smoke. From Kristin's bedroom wall.

my only option was to change my ways
to change the way i see things
my only option was to change the way
i see things way i see things

the days in the wake were
cold and golden
always dripping honey from the
the edges of buildings
blend together
make the weather seem so severe

my only option was to change the way
i see things i feel it
my only fear was a change that happens
when i'm sleeping
leaves me waiting

Atlas Sound - April 13

This is a little (or rather long) song i made today in the studio as practice with my new setup for the upcoming solo Atlas Sound performances at ATP, with Animal Collective in Europe, and Primevara Sound. This should give you an idea of what to expect of a solo A.S. performance. Its based from a sample I made of Nicolas' broken piano.

After the Deerhunter show at the Market Hotel Friday, I became extremely ill. Lockett and I had both been suffering from a severe flu, but I think exhaustion and too much cigarette smoke pushed me beyond my limits and by Sunday, the 13th I had to go to the emergency room in Manhattan. I honestly felt like I was dying and there is no better time to explore and relive small tears in your past than to have them floating in front of you in a haze of painkillers and i.v. bags.

On the "Atlas Sound" show this Friday in Brooklyn

It will actually be a Deerhunter show. we are playing the new album "Microcastle" we have recorded with Nicolas Vernhes at the amazing Rare Book Room here in Brooklyn in its entirety. The reason we did not announce it as such is that a.) it was originally intended to be just an atlas sound show, but we have had such a great time recording with each other and rehearsing in the studio that we thought it would be fun to try and pull off an impromptu show with borrowed equipment. and b.) we weren't sure it would work out at first. I just want to say that we have been doing shows with Todd P for years now (he gave us shows before anyone would even think of talking to us.) Todd is the most upstanding and all-around dedicated dudes I've ever dealt with. He knows what he's doing and always keeps his priorities straight - putting on fun shows and treating bands well. In my opinion, as an outsider, this city is very lucky to have someone putting so much effort into putting on amazing shows. On another note: I seriously doubt the show is sold out and it probably won't sell out. I don't know much about the details but I'd encourage people to just chill and try and come out and have fun with us. Hope those who are interested will come check out the new songs, they are a lot different and we've been working really hard and having a great time. Respect to all.

Bradford

p.s. check out Todd's site for tons of other rad shows coming up in the NYC / Brooklyn area.

Monday, February 25, 2008

hey everybody! here is a tour update.

things are going really rad. we've had a few headaches to deal with. we are riding in deerhunter's virtually brand-new van which has never had any problems. suddenly it started stalling out. long story short we left it with wzt hearts jason and the rad people at a warehouse in baltimore and rented a van to do the philly and nyc shows here is a recap of what's been going on so far.

wednesday - chapel hill
rad place. rad soundguy. i thought he would hate me because last time i was there was the single worst deerhunter show we have ever played (i had the flu and lost my voice, josh's bass amp blew, etc.) everyone there was seriously nice and had a great since of humor about it. people seemed to really enjoy the show. i chewed gum and it made me feel sassy. we ate burritos with one of the drummers that played in rollins-era black flag.

thursday - washington d.c.
i love the blackcat backstage. i love the ladies who run it. i liked the kids i got to talk to before and after the show a lot to. there was a deep/serious ice storm threat so it was nice for so many kids to make the effort to come out. we decided to drive to baltimore so we could stay with our friend jason from wzt hearts who lives in a rad warehouse where other members of ecstatic sunshine and other rad bands live. wham city (dan deacon's komedy kult) were rehearsing some kind of avant garde theatre adaptation of "jurassic park" downstairs, so there was constant bizarre screaming. i also awoke to find two kittens wrestling on my chest. the kittens were ultra rad. it was a nice place to get to and chill while we dealt with the van situation.

friday - phillidelphia
kristin and the gang were in full force dealing with the van situation, arranging rentals, organizing gear etc. they like to keep me out of the way, so i sat around listening to kanye west and playing with kittens. we ended up showing up at johnny brenda's in philly HOURS late. dave and amber from dirty projectors loaned us amps and Adam and Honey's rad friends found us a punk rock bass rig and H.C. Basement-style drums. (H.C. = hardcore). the show was really funny and we had a great time. philly rules.

saturday - manhattan

we drove back to baltimore to rent a bigger van so we would not have to backline (borrow gear) for the nyc shows. it took forever and again we showed up really late to the venue. our good friend matt littlejohn (king of soundmen) did sound for us at our two nyc shows. (he is incredible, he's worked with Grizzly Bear, TVOTR, among many others.) the show itself was a little less funny and enjoyable, mainly for me, due to a headcold that came on pretty strong and made me feel supershitty. john norris came from MTV news. he is fucking rad. really awesome guy. got to see lots of old friends and make some new ones. i had my jewish godmother in LA (judy, queen of pr) priceline me a fucking boss 4-star hotel room for CHEAP so that i could soak the fluish grossness out of my bones and sleep soundly. I highly recommend the Barclay on east 48th street in manhattan. priceline is welfare for touring tired punks. i am now addicted.

sunday - brooklyn

this show fucking ruled. good times. i started the day by having kristin meet me at the hotel so we could go to mtv studios to film a news segment with John Norris and CJ, who are super nice and rad and sincere dudes. It was such a trip to be in that building. its in times square and and everyone stands around it with fancy cameras waiting for amy winehouse or somebody to come walking out. the news segment was fun, despite the fact that i was super tired. i tried to do a cover of kanye west's flashing lights to show how i make songs really fast for the blog, but that song is so fucking tight that i don't think i came close to doing it justice. anyway, there was no pressure and all the dudes there were really cool so it was a lot of fun. i went to uniqlo afterwards and dug it as usual. ran into kristin, jane, and julie (all three members of the alphabets in one old volvo) which ruled cause i didn't have to take a train into brooklyn. the williamsburg show was totally fun and i think everyone there had a pretty cool time. i'm trying to make some new songs to put up. i want to make an entire van ep like the one i did in europe last year. expect new stuff in the next day or two.

First Atlas Sound Show

I was super nervous and had about five panic attacks till the family told me to fucking chill. never had stage fright before in my life. its complicated to translate a record you made kind of on the fly while in an mentally agitated state into a feasible structured live performance. honey, adam, and brian all arrived friday night from portland and l.a. so this was kind of a warm up / practice show. we were all kind of winging it. the set will probably be much different and more expanded by the time we hit a town near you. my mom came and brought me a flower from my aunt's yard. (the first sign of spring, she explained.)
Our friends Mike White and Sloan Simpson where there and made photos and an audio recording, respectively. Our buddy Lynn also came by as well as my cousin Kelly. My mom can be clearly heard as the loudest most supportive audience member. Also it should be noted that when I am nervous (especially when i get around my folks) I tend to develop an extremely weird gay / southern drawl that embarrasses me somewhat.
With that said... here are some pictures:

Valet:

See the rest of the pictures from the night at Mike's rad photo website, Deadly Designs.

Check out Sloan's audio recording at his equally rad audio website, Southern Shelter.

Kristin's oral review of the show, delivered to me afterwards:
"It was pretty good I guess, even if 90% of it was stand-up comedy..."

Hey guys here is a new atlas sound jam. Its about discomfort and terror. Its called "Cloves." PostGRUNGE death trip. Smoke a spliff before you dig into this one.

Cloves

years were spent uh huh
prayer addict uh huh
quit smoking those cloves
praise the dawn uh huh
reach the top uh huh
keep walking towards the creek
save your crimes uh huh
bored to death uh huh

Orange Ohms Glow:
(Instrumental)

Activation:
coral or uneven cloth
under mirror-like surface
activation in the abyss
mouth on mouth was catalyst
change the way you feel back home
change the way desire folds
predict the maze and plan escape
as tens of thousands of portraits fade
avoid the signal trace the call
abandon reason break his jaw
activation was described
guard your land set traps and hide
coral or uneven cloth
under mirror-like surface
activation in the abyss
mouth on mouth was catalyst
change the way you feel back home
change the way desire folds
predict the maze and plan escape
as tens of thousands of portraits fade
as tens of thousands of portraits fade

Hunting Quail:
When they bring four eyes
when they told me surprise
they bring whole eyes
keep the heads frozen
they print change of scene
will i be older?
will i be older?
my father took me
on a trip hunting
we didn't catch a thing
blame it on the weather
we went back home
to the cabin prepared for us
build a fire, will you?
bring the wood, bring the wood
i would not count on it
i would not count on it
someday even
murder my own memory

Coriander:
(Instrumental, full disclosure - this is a total attempt at making a Casino Versus Japan song)

Humidity:
Caroline you've grown into quite the beast
responsible and quick
have you seen my keys?
trying to count my hens
trying to count my hens
Caroline you've seen
your t-shirt was burning
steal across the field
haunt the hares and feel
remote and free
remote and free
remote and free
Caroline you've grown
hardly recognize
glass mosaic piece
reflected in your eyes
fire burns the palms
the mountain wind is calm
stare out your door
stare out your door
stare out your door

Valley of the Saroos (Joe Meek Cover):
(Instrumental)

Ghetto Cross, Aaron Hemphill, Half Pint & The Fifths, Martha & The Vandellas

I changed the picture because blog controversy is sooo 2007.

Present Tense: Cole Alexander (Black Lips) and I have a new thing called Ghetto Cross. The name is old. We first talked about having a band called that when we first met and started hanging out. Then he used it for a Black Lips song title. Now we take it back to the streets. He came over saturday night and we knocked out a song for a 7" we are going to do for Chunklet Magazine guy Henry Owing's new label. Is it the label still called Drug Racer, Henry? We hope to have it done in time for the Atlas Sound tour, and upcoming Black Lips dates.

Anyway here is the first song we did, 'Dog Years' (Download MP3)

More photos of other members of Deerhunter besides me in dresses... first, Colin....

... and Lockett. This was backstage at Hard Rock Live opening up for YYY's. Please note the Martha & The Vandellas Songbook he is caressing. It will make this post circular in theme and narrative...

Next we have...

photo of the Liars from the ATP Release the Bats show we played with them back in November...
My buddy Aaron Hemphill from Liars returned my tennis serve cover of his song "Pure Unevil" with a cover of the song "Bite Marks" from the forthcoming Atlas Sound record that most of you have heard already. Go see the Liars / No Age superbill when it hits your town, for real.

Aaron Hemphill - Bitemarks (Atlas Sound Cover)

Here is the original song from the Cryptomixtape that Marc Hogan at Pitchfork correctly (and very impressively) identified as Half Pint and the Fifths' "Orphan Boy"

Tomorrow I plan on posting a micromix of songs I ripped from vinyl all day Sunday. The weather here in Atlanta has been amazing the past two days. I spent Sunday with my window open, burning incense and ripping vinyl. Relaxo. Here is a sneak preview of one of the jewels of my Girl Groups collection, a rare Martha & The Vandellas Bootleg. Check out the guitar playing on this shit. Totally manic....
